Debut of the Month - The Symptoms of My Insanity + Giveaway

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book Profile
Name - The Symptoms of My Insanity (Goodreads)
Author - Mindy Raf
Genre - Contemporary
Release Date - April 18th 2013
When you’re a hypochondriac, there are a million different things that could be wrong with you, but for Izzy, focusing on what could be wrong might be keeping her from dealing with what’s really wrong.
I almost raised my hand, but what would I say? “Mr. Bayer, may I please be excused? I’m not totally positive, but I think I might have cancer.” No way. Then everyone at school would know, and they would treat me differently, and I would be known as “Izzy, that poor girl who diagnosed herself with breast cancer during biology.”
But Izzy’s sense of humor can only get her so far when suddenly her best friend appears to have undergone a personality transplant, her mother’s health takes a turn for the worse, and her beautiful maybe-boyfriend is going all hot and cold. Izzy thinks she’s preparing for the worst-case scenario, but when the worst-case scenario actually hits, it’s a different story altogether—and there’s no tidy list of symptoms to help her through the insanity.
The Insider's Scoop
1) I randomly met my editor at a stand-up comedy show. She watched me do stand-up, we chatted after the show, and later that week she emailed me about writing YA. (At the time I mostly wrote stand-up, sketch comedy, humor essays)
2) The bra fitting scene in the first chapter is the actual first scene I wrote as Izzy.
3) In the first draft Izzy’s dad was around. He lived nearby with a new wife who was an ex plastic surgeon/current spiritual healer.
4) There wasn’t a working title for the book until the third round of revisions. We always just referred to it as “Izzy” or “Izzy & Co”
5) My own mother (who was battling stomach cancer) passed away during the third revision. Finishing the book was especially tough, though at times quite cathartic. (Sending love your way Mindy!)
Mindy Raf is a writer, comedy performer, and musician based in Brooklyn, NY. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan, and grew up in a Detroit suburb right around here (visualize someone pointing to the inner part of their thumb). She has written for VH1, CollegeHumor.com, was a contributor to the “My Parents Were Awesome” anthology. She has been invited to perform at the Women in Comedy Festival, SketchFestNYC, NY Funny Songs Fest, and the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, where she was named a “stellar surprise” by The Portland Mercury.
Dream Debutante Dress -
The Witches is one of my favorite books, and I absolutely love the movie. Plus, who doesn’t need the perfect black cocktail dress with a PURPLE LINED CAPE! A classy, versatile, sexy dress (that’s also a witch disguise), that’s how I want to debut!
Notes from a YA Debutante
Some stream of consciousness facts:
- I perform stand-up comedy, storytelling and musical comedy when I’m not writing.
- I live in Brooklyn.
- I grew up in Michigan. (A suburb outside Detroit)
  No, not near 8 mile.
  Okay, well not that far from 8 mile.
  Stupid 8 mile movie STILL making me answer that question every single time.
- Okay, fine, Eminem and I used to rap battle all the time. I’d drive in from the suburbs and we’d freestyle. They just cut that part out of the movie.
- One of these facts so far is a lie.
- I grew up with five cats all named after food: Mocha, Fudge, Cookie, Sugar, Oreo.
- One of them (Oreo) we kind of stole thinking he was a stray, but he actually belonged to our neighbour.
- The neighbor ended up giving it to us because he liked my mom so much. (His real name -and what we called him after- was Dudley)
- Someone just sent me an e-mail asking me if my boobs growing up were the same size as my protagonist’s Izzy. Wow.
- The answer is yes. Kind of. In the book Izzy is a 34 DD. That was my size in 8th grade, and until about two years ago when I went to one of those fancy specialty stores for a fitting (thank you, Oprah). I was resized from the 34 DD to a 32 G. Wha? Yeah.
- Did I share too much?
- I just ate an entire bag of Jalapeno flavored potato chips.
And. . .scene.
Bookie's Note: Okay so technically Mindy is an April Debutante but I was busy and she was busy and it just ending in June okay? JUST GO WITH IT!!! Mindy, your thoughts were so funny, I thought it deserved to be in different colours. And definitely not too much. It was funny, like really funny, like I'm still cracking up about Oreo funny! Everyone agree? Yeah, yeah? YEAH?
Anyhow, remember to come back tomorrow to see the second half of Mindy's feature and for a giveaway! :)
Debut of the Month - The Boyfriend App + Giveaway
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book Profile

Name - The Boyfriend App (Goodreads)
Author - Katie Sise
Genre - Contemporary
Release Date - April 30th 2013

In The Boyfriend App by Katie Sise, super-smart, somewhat geeky Audrey McCarthy can’t wait to get out of high school. Her father’s death and the transformation of her one-time BFF, Blake Dawkins, into her worst nightmare have her longing for the new start college will bring.

But college takes money. So Audrey decides she has to win the competition for the best app designed by a high schooler—and the $200,000 that comes with it. She develops something she calls the Boyfriend App, and suddenly she’s the talk of the school and getting kissed by the hottest boys around. But can the Boyfriend App bring Audrey true love?

The Insider's Scoop

Three Scoops of Insider-ness on The Boyfriend App’s Mean Girl Blake Dawkins

1) I secretly love my mean-girl antagonist Blake Dawkins.

2) I came up with an entire storyline about Blake having experienced oxytocin poisoning as an infant, thereby causing her narcissitic-bordering on-psychopathic behavior. But early test-readers pulled me back. Sometime I can’t help my wild imagination: It takes over! Thank goodness for test -readers and editors who know when to take it down a notch.

3) I wrote many pages from Blake’s perspective because I was so fascinated by her. Here’s a excerpt taking place after her breakup with Xander:

Just one last taste.

“I mean it, Xander. This is the last time. We have to stop.”
I was whispering lies like these to my ex-boyfriend as his hands slipped over my waist. I’d angled my body just right, so that his fingertips could trail the flat plane of my stomach. Guys are highly visual. So is the rest of the world.
It’s crucial to remember that.
Xander’s fiery, hazel eyes melted as he took me in. “Blake,” he said softly, right before his lips found mine. His hands were moving higher when a shrill bell sounded.
No.
“Your dad?” Xander blurted. I didn’t need to shove him off me. He was already yanking his t-shirt from my bedroom floor and fumbling with a dark brown leather belt.
            Ding Dong. Ding Dong.
            “Can’t be. Probably some useless girl scout,” I said, trying not to sound scared. But Xander knew me too well. And even if he didn’t, I couldn’t keep the shake from my fingers as I buttoned my jeans.
            Ding Dong.
            “Hide. Just in case!”
Xander moved toward the closet and I raced down the stairs. My dad wouldn’t ring the doorbell to his own house. Unless he’d lost his keys? Or been robbed by a disgruntled former employee. Would that make him more or less pissed to find Xander here when neither he nor my mom were home?
            I skipped the final step and unlocked the bolt. The metal rang out. I flinched and swung open the door.
My sister. She stood on our white-brick front porch looking pissed.
“Nic?” I said. I hadn’t seen her in months. Her hair was dyed a few shades lighter than mine—a deep chestnut—and it was pulled into a low, messy ponytail. She’d stopped wearing makeup, too. Like she’d try anything not to look like me. To separate her from us.
But there was no way. Our clear complexions were identical shades of olive. Our noses were the natural version of the tiny, perfect kind girls try for at the plastic surgeon’s office. Our eyes matched, too. Dark like coffee beans and curved like almonds. The only difference now was the purplish crescent moons stamped beneath Nic’s.
My sister wore a baggy gray cashmere sweater. She used to wear snug-fitting stuff during high school. Not anymore. The wide neck fell over her slender shoulders and draped loose around her waist, tighter on the hips.
            “Don’t look so happy to see me,” Nic said, pushing past me with a worn leather bag I’d never seen before. She stared as I stood immobilized next to the coat rack. “Good for you, Blake. You’ve put on some weight,” she went on, even though I hadn’t. “Where’s dad?”
            “Probably on his way home,” I lied. The threat of Dad usually made Nic nicer.
            My sister surveyed the living room and I tried to see what she did. Glossy interior design books that no one read were stacked beside a potted orchid on a mahogany coffee table. Framed photos of Nic and me fake-smiling on a skiing trip to Vail sat on a mirrored glass armoire. The violet velvet sofa with gold armrests was new: One of our mother’s late night internet purchases. A wave of embarrassment washed over me. But Nic gave the sofa an approving nod. Then she turned to me and said, “Why is Xander’s car parked at the end of the block?” which meant she’d circled the cul-de-sac before coming home. Which was weird.
            I opened my mouth to lie again but then Xander was on the stairs.
            “Hey, Nic,” he said, stopping on the bottom step to tie his sneakers.
            Nic was all smiles. She loved Xander. She loved my ex-best friend, Audrey, too. Maybe other people who left me made her feel better about what she did.
“Are you two back together?” Nic asked, clasping her hands and being sweet for the first time since Christmas, when she convinced me to pee in a plastic cup marked NICOLE DAWKINS.
            “No,” we both said. Then Xander mumbled something about watching Friends reruns (my favorite. I’m in love with pretty Rachel and smart Ross and the weird 90s haircuts and outfits.) Nic gave Xander a look that said she didn’t believe him so I changed the topic. “Aren’t you supposed to have midterms this week?” I asked. Notre Dame’s webpage made it easy to keep up with Nic’s schedule and other school stuff. I went to every single play on campus because Nic was usually in two each semester, and she always forgot to tell us which ones.
            Nic waved her hand. “No midterms for my kind of classes,” she said, and I wondered if that was true. Nic was a Film, Television and Theater major. Notre Dame was five minutes from our house, but Nic lived in a dorm and didn’t come home except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Next week was her spring break, but she usually stayed at school for breaks, too. She told us it was because she got so much done while the other kids were back home with their families.
I stood there and tried to think up something interesting to say. Nothing came. So we just stared at each other. Nic was beautiful even if she did look tired. Last year she told me I was the second prettiest girl in South Bend. It was the nicest thing she’d said to me in years, even if it was meant to be about her.
            “I just thought I’d stop by and see what you all were up to,” she finally said. She had a funny look on her face. Nic was a terrible liar, which was too bad for her, because she lied all the time. But this lie made me smile. Tomorrow was my eighteenth birthday. She’d deigned the event important enough to show up.
            Xander and I exchanged glances and I knew he was thinking the same thing. “Cool,” I said to Nic, even if she was one of the only three people on the planet who could make me feel anything but.

Katie Sise is a New York City-based author, jewelry designer and television host. Her jewelry has been featured in major magazines like Vogue, W, Elle, Lucky, InStyle, Self, People, and Marie Claire, and worn by celebrities like Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway, Cameron Diaz, and Beyonce Knowles. Katie has designed jewelry collaborations with outlets like Target. Her first novel, THE BOYFRIEND APP, debuts on April 30th 2013 with HarperCollins Balzer + Bray.

Dream Debutante Dress - For my debutante dress, I picked a creation by Elisa Jimenez. Here's a shot of Elisa working on the dress on a model:

Elisa was one of my favorite designers even before Project Runway made her famous. She was so kind to me when I was first starting out as a jewelry designer in my twenties. She let me design jewelry for her fashion shows, and it was so cool to be a part of her wildly imaginative world.

Notes from a YA Debutante

The ten-steps of employment that led me to being an author.

1) Clown. (I’m not kidding. I was only eleven or twelve, but I went to clown camp and everything. I could earn 100 bucks per birthday party! I was already into starting my own business even as a pre-teen.)

2) Babysitter. Loved eating all the new snacks. And especially loved getting paid to eat all of those snacks and talk on the phone after the kids went to bed.

3) Lifeguard and Swim team Coach. This was my job from age 16 through college. I loved it.

4) Girl who drove to different Walmarts from Albany to Massachusetts to stock shelves with a new test-brand of French’s potato sticks. I had to load the things in my car, so my hair always smelled like potato chips. I’d just graduated college and I was trying to save up enough money to move to New York City. It would have been a terrible job, except my dad would come along for the car ride and we'd take turns driving. We'd talk, or sometimes just drive silently. He’d act like it was no big deal to come along for these 5 hours drives. Or he’d say he just wanted to see a certain part of Massachusetts that he hadn’t seen before. But I always knew he did it out of sheer kindness to keep me company.

5) Bartender and Waitress. Highlight: Once dropped a very expensive bottle of champage on my way to deliver it to Robert DeNiro’s table. Lowlight: a restaurant owner told me I was the worst waitress she’s ever seen.

6) Salesgirl in a boutique. This led me to start making jewelry. The boutique owner was generous enough to let me sell it there. It started a whole career! Which leads us to…

7) Jewellery designer. So much more fun than waitressing! I could hardly believe my luck when it started happening :) All the odd jobs were so worth it to get to this point!

Then I started doing style segments on TV, which leads to…

8) TV host. Mostly for style segments on networks like Oxygen and Discovery. From 2008-2010, I co-hosted a monthly television show for HSN.

9) In 2009, I had an idea to write a book about how to navigate a creative career path. In 2010, Perseus/Running Press published my first book, CREATIVE GIRL: THE ULTIMATE GUIDE FOR TURNING TALENT AND CREATIVITY INTO A REAL CAREER.

10) I took classes and worked on a bunch of fiction projects for several years. In 2012, Alessandra Balzer bought THE BOYFRIEND APP. It pubs this month on April 30th and I couldn't be more excited!

Bookie's Note: Thank-you so much for agreeing to be an April debutante Katie! I'm a little awestruck that you've been on a TV host! THAT MAKES YOU FAMOUS! :D Cross country stock-shelver sounds so ... different! I have NEVER heard of anyone who has done anything like that for a job! I hope you were paid well! AND THAT THEY PAID FOR GAS!

Remember to come back tomorrow to see the second half of Katie's feature and for a giveaway! :)

Debut of the Month - The Murmurings + Giveaway

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book Profile
Name - The Murmurings (Goodreads)
Author - Carly Anne West
Genre - Psychological Thriller/ Paranormal/ Horror
Release Date - March 5th 2013
Everyone thinks Sophie’s sister, Nell, went crazy. After all, she heard strange voices that drove her to commit suicide. But Sophie doesn’t believe that Nell would take her own life, and she’s convinced that Nell’s doctor knows more than he’s letting on.
As Sophie starts to piece together Nell’s last days, every lead ends in a web of lies. And the deeper Sophie digs, the more danger she’s in—because now she’s hearing the same haunting whispers. Sophie’s starting to think she’s going crazy too. Or worse, that maybe she’s not….
The Insider's Scoop
A little backstory on THE MURMURINGS:
Okay, so here's a little insight into some of the inspiration behind THE MURMURINGS. My husband and I had just moved to the bay area in preparation for me to start grad school. He and I were living in different shifts at that point; he worked nights, I went to school during the day. At the time, I was toying with some ideas for a new story that involved themes around what was more frightening - perceived danger or actual danger. On the one hand, real danger is, well, dangerous. On the other hand, it's in many ways just as frightening to not be able to trust your own senses to tell you whether or not you should be afraid.
On this particular night, my husband was asleep in the other room, and I was unpacking a box of books in the living room near the only closet that the apartment boasted. It was a great little apartment, by the way. Built in the 1920's, really prime location on a corner near lots of public transportation, coffee shops, all the good stuff. Well, typically, I'd hear buses going by outside or activity at the bar across the street. And on this night, I did hear all of that, except when I didn't. Because all at once, sound just sort of drained from the entire room, and the air got really heavy, and I heard a very distinct murmuring sound in my right ear. I spun around to see who was there, thinking at the time it had to have been my husband playing a joke on me or something. But there was nothing, of course, and he was sound asleep in the bedroom.
The next morning, I'd completely forgotten about the incident, and I was unpacking dishes in the kitchen. My husband was around the corner unpacking the same box of books I'd been working on the night before when I heard him say, "What?" I came around the corner and he repeated his question. "I didn't hear what you were saying; you were mumbling," he said. So I told him I hadn't said anything, but then remembered to tell him what'd happened to me the night before in that very same spot. We lived in that apartment for three more years, and strange things would happen periodically. That same heavy feeling in the room would reoccur, as though someone else was there with me, and then all at once, it would dissappate, and I'd be on my own again. Our cats, normally playful and ever-present, were really skittish the entire time we lived there, and they would rarely step foot in that living room closet. A few times, they'd even look up in a corner of the closet, lay their ears down, and back away from the closet slowly before tearing around the corner to hide for the rest of the day.
When we finally moved out, we brought it up in a very general way with the property manager. She just nodded and said, "Yes, other people have heard what they described as a sort of low voice in that area of the room." Might have been nice insight before renting that apartment. That's my one and only real haunting experience, but it was a good one!
Dream Debutante Dress -  You know, I lived in Nashville for three years. You'd think that in that amount of time, I would have had some sort of debutante moment. Alas, I worked instead at the local newspaper selling help wanted ads during a recession. So let's make up for that obvious gap in my life by designing a slightly absurd dress. I'm thinking it has to be very 60s-era. I don't know why it has to be, but it does. Green, with white polka dots. I actually own a little clutch with that same design, and to have an entire dress of it would be magical. And, you know, I already own the purse, so accessorizing just became much easier. And for reasons unknown to even me, I want tulle in the skirt. White tulle. It should rustle when I walk. It should scratch my legs a little.
I've attached a picture of the style. I'd just swap in my own design if given the choice. :-) Very, very Mad Men.
Notes from a YA Debutante
This feels like a great opportunity for a Top Ten List of "No, I swear, this really happened" Moments:
10.) When I was little, my mom was reading Stephen King's IT. I had no idea what the book was about and had never heard the story. But one night, I had a dream about a very specific scene in the book. I told my mom about it the next morning, and she gave me a funny look but didn't say much. For the next two nights, I had horrible nightmares of a similar variety, along the same story line. I told my mom each night, and by the third night, she told me not to worry, that I wouldn't have those dreams anymore. Later on, she shared with me that I'd actually been dreaming about what she had read the night before. So she stopped reading the book, and sure enough, I stopped having the nightmares. No, I swear, it really happened!
9.) In high school, for reasons far too complex to share in a post this short, I spent an entire day dressed as a shark. No, I swear, it really happened!
8.) I once almost fainted on BART (it's sort of like a subway in San Francisco), and nobody asked me if I needed help! They just watched me slide down the wall and hit the floor. Yeah, it happened just like that.
7.) The cat I grew up with lived to be 19 years old. Really! It happened.
6.) When I was learning how to drive, I drove my parents' car through our garage door. Seriously, that happened.
5.) When I was in college, I conducted a sociological experiment for extra credit that involved me standing in a crowded elevator, yelling "ding!" as we hit every floor, and noting people's reactions to my behavior. Yup, that happened.
4.) Just two weeks ago, I had an incredibly vivid dream about donuts (don't laugh ... you know you want to have a dream about donuts, too). The next morning, my husband bought two dozen donuts for his coworkers, just because it sounded good to him for some reason (I'd told him nothing about my dream). Yes, it totally happened!
3.) It would get so hot in Phoenix (where I grew up) that during the summer, if I stood too long in one spot on the street and I was wearing cheap shoes, they would begin to melt to the asphalt. Yes ma'am, that happened.
2.) Did you know it's possible to dislocate your pinky toe? It is. Because I did that.
1.) I got into the writing program at Mills College even though I was number seven on the waiting list. Yes! It happened. Dreams really do come true, kids!
Bookie's Note: Carly, you are probably one of the most dedicated debutantes I've had on the blog. To the point of actually imagining your dream debutante dress? That's brilliant! Carly I think you're some kind of physic or something along the lines. Two incidents of creepy dreaming? Coincidence? I think not! I can't believe your shoes actually melted and here I thought I had it bad! So hot on the coast in Summers! Thank-you for sharing all this with us Carly, you've certainly had a very interesting list of facts! :P Haha
Remember to come back tomorrow to see the second half of Carly's feature and for a giveaway! :)
Debut of the Month - All About Pretty Girl-13 +Giveaway
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book Profile

Name - Pretty Girl -13 (Goodreads)
Author - Liz Coley
Genre - Psychological Thriller
Release Date - March 19th 2013

Angie Chapman was thirteen years old when she ventured into the woods alone on a Girl Scouts camping trip. Now she's returned home…only to find that it's three years later and she's sixteen-or at least that's what everyone tells her.

What happened to the past three years of her life?

Angie doesn't know.

But there are people who do — people who could tell Angie every detail of her forgotten time, if only they weren't locked inside her mind. With a tremendous amount of courage, Angie embarks on a journey to discover the fragments of her personality, otherwise known as her "alters." As she unearths more and more about her past, she discovers a terrifying secret and must decide: When you remember things you wish you could forget, do you destroy the parts of yourself that are responsible?

Available - The Book Depository | Fishpond | Amazon | Barnes and Noble

The Insider's Scoop

Angie’s alters told me their individual stories on a seven-hour car ride from Washington DC through the mountains of West Virginia heading home to Ohio in late January, 2009. I didn’t write the first word of the book until November 1, 2009. That’s how vividly they stuck with me.

Pretty Girl-13 was my Nanowrimo 2009 novel. When I started writing, I had no idea how it would end. In fact, I thought all the alters would share the same fate. The characters took me on their journey.

My first trusted readers told me my initial shot at the ending was lacking drama after all that had gone before. They were right. So then I wrote a real Act III with much more conflict and climax. I suspect that people who haven’t researched DID aren’t as familiar with the intense symbolic level on which the alters interact, but the metaphors really spoke to me.

I’d actually like someone with DID to review the book. Any takers?

I wrote all of the novel sitting on the floor in front of a gas fire with my laptop up on a footstool. Maybe that’s why the fire motif is so prominent in the story. If I had to write an English paper about the novel, I think fire would be my topic.

Many people characterize Pretty Girl-13 as an issue book about Dissociative Identity Disorder or about abuse. To me, at heart it is a story about memory and identity. DID is the vehicle that carries the story.
